Question About Game Level Design…?
Hey, im a game designer with focus on level design. this is just a hobby but i’m intrigued as to how larger projects get done? i usually have a very small attention span and can usually only get smaller levels done. I’ve broken my design process into steps so that i dont run into my own tail but i would like to start chasing larger projects. as a reference i design a lot of levels for Thief, the level design community there have HUGE maps made solo upwards from cities with mansions added on and massive amounts of details. anywho, how does one person keep the passion for a single project to stay on designing one level? any advice?
I used to do a lot of level design back in the days of Doom and Quake (yes, I’m that old).
For me, the trick was to really divide things up. If I outlined the whole map, I would quickly start taking short cuts on details, etc.
So, for me, the best way to build a really cool big map was to seriously concentrate on small parts one at a time. For example, I might start with a simple room, and I would not leave that room until I thought it was very cool on its own, ornate, cool looking and with right props, weapons, powerups. Only when I thought I could be proud of the single room would I move to start working on the next room.
If you have a free evening and you design more than one room, I think you are getting ahead of yourself and will start skimping on the details.
